Finding Resilience

Reiki

Reiki is a safe, non-invasive healing practice that encourages the body toward balance.

Balance is important because your body can only heal itself when your nervous system is calm―traumatized bodies don’t heal.

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Kee) is a form of energy medicine that uses touch intended to heal emotional, spiritual and physical stress and dis-ease by mending energy imbalances. The word Reiki is rooted from the Japanese words (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice, although several religions offer a similar practice commonly called hands on healing.

Reiki is much different from massage as there is no manipulation of the muscles. The experience of Reiki practice is more like a hands on meditation.

Reiki therapy is used for a variety of health purposes, but primarily for treating pain, stress, and fatigue; for speeding recovery from surgery or cancer therapy; for improving memory and feelings of well being; and for end-of-life care.

Benefits include:

  • Reduction in chronic pain and stress
  • Clarity of mind
  • Improved sleep
  • Removal stuck and unnecessary energy
  • Deep relaxation
  • Elevated feelings of general wellbeing
  • Clears, charges and balances chakras (personal energy centers)
  • Helps to alleviate the side effects of cancer treatments

What To Expect

Reiki is a Japanese healing modality that helps your system rebalance itself. This therapy is used for a variety of health purposes, but primarily for treating pain, stress, and fatigue. Pronounced “Ray-Kee”, it is a form of energy medicine that uses touch intended to heal emotional, spiritual and physical stress and dis-ease by mending energy imbalances and activating the parasympathetic nervous system to promote self-healing.

Many leading hospitals including the Cleveland Clinic, John Hopkins, and the Mayo Clinic promote the use of Reiki therapy to aid in patient recovery. Because it is an energy modality, Reiki can be done in person or remotely with the client and practitioner in different physical locations.

When you come in for a Reiki session, you will lie on a table fully clothed. Most people lie on their back, but you can lay face down if that is more comfortable.

Each Reiki experience is different as you are getting exactly what you need in the present moment. Most people feel very relaxed during a session, even to the point of falling asleep. Another common experience is seeing colors in your mind’s eye when your eyes are closed. This is just the energy being reorganized.

Other sensations you might experience include:

  • tingling/light vibrations throughout the body
  • a feeling of floating
  • gentle waves of energy
  • swirling
  • heat
  • chills
  • sudden burst of insight
  • crying
  • stomach rumbling
  • pain for a moment then release

Those are a some of the things you could experience during a session. After the session, just like a massage or other body work, you will want to drink a little extra water and take it easy. Although after some treatments you may feel really energetic! Listen to what your body wants.

It is common to experience a headache, nausea, fatigue, etc after a session. While most clients don’t experience these symptoms is it common and will only last about 6-12 hours.

Distance Reiki

Because Reiki is energy work, it can be done remotely. Distance Reiki is when the Reiki practitioner is in one location and the client is in another. For a Distance Reiki session, a quiet uninterrupted space is required. I ask that you set up a space in which you will be comfortable for the duration of the session. I like to send my clients the same music I will be listening to during our session for an added feeling of connection.

Before we begin, I will call you to answer any questions and confirm how the session will work. Just as an in an in person session, I will invite you to take three deep breaths to help you relax into your space, then we will hang up and I will begin your energy work. After the session, we will reconnect on the phone to discuss your session.
